Cryptocoryne Balansae is a favored plant among both novice and seasoned aquarium hobbyists, known for its striking, reed-like leaves that add a sense of movement and tranquility to any aquascape. This species, native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of Southern Thailand, thrives in environments rich in nutrients such as nitrate, phosphate, iron, CO2, and particularly calcium. Without adequate calcium, the leaves may grow twisted or deformed, making calcium supplementation highly recommended.

Balansae plants are best placed in the background of an aquarium, where their tall, slender leaves can create cozy hiding spots for fish. The plant requires moderate to high lighting, with at least 2-3 watts per gallon needed to achieve the desirable puckering or ruffled effect on its leaves. Under high light, the leaves may also develop a bronze tint. While mature plants can produce flowers when grown emersed, this species is generally easier to maintain when fully submerged.

One important aspect of caring for Cryptocoryne Balansae is maintaining stable water parameters, as sudden changes can lead to a phenomenon known as "crypt melt," where the leaves begin to rot and deteriorate. If this occurs, it's crucial to remove the affected leaves and stabilize the water conditions. It's not uncommon for the plant to experience some melt when first introduced to a new tank, but it typically recovers and begins producing new growth once acclimated.

Propagation is straightforward, as the plant spreads through runners. Healthy, mature plants can spread quickly, so trimming runners periodically can help manage its growth. If you wish to propagate, simply tuck the runners into the substrate.
