Duckweed is a subfamily of aquatic plants that float on or just beneath the surface of calm freshwater environments. These small, simple plants are also commonly referred to as water lentils or water lenses. Unlike most plants, duckweed lacks a traditional stem or leaves, instead forming a small, flat structure called a "frond," which is only a few cells thick. This structure often contains air pockets that help the plant float on the water's surface. Duckweed multiplies rapidly and can cover large areas of water. Occasionally, duckweed will produce tiny flowers, making it one of the smallest flowering plants in the world.
Duckweed is incredibly versatile and can thrive in a wide range of temperatures, from 41°F to 95°F. It requires low to moderate lighting and is an excellent floating plant for aquariums, providing shade, reducing algae growth, and offering a natural habitat for small aquatic creatures.
