The Red Tiger Lotus, scientifically known as Nymphaea lotus, is a striking addition to any freshwater aquarium, known for its vibrant, deep red foliage. While this plant is primarily grown for its decorative leaves in aquariums, it is also popular in garden ponds and greenhouses for its beautiful flowers, though flowering is uncommon in tank environments. To maintain the rich red coloration of the leaves, the Red Tiger Lotus requires strong lighting, which also helps bring out the tiger-like variegations that make this plant so visually appealing.
When planting the Red Tiger Lotus in your aquarium, it's important to gently push about one-third of the bulb into the substrate, ensuring that the shoots or leaves remain above the substrate. Avoid burying the entire bulb, as this can cause it to rot. If the bulb floats initially, allow it some time to become waterlogged, which will eventually cause it to sink. As the plant establishes itself, the roots will grow into the substrate, securely anchoring the bulb.
This plant is relatively easy to care for, thriving in a pH range of 6 to 7.5 and under moderate lighting conditions. While CO2 supplementation is not necessary, the Red Tiger Lotus will benefit from regular maintenance, including trimming any floating leaves to encourage the growth of underwater foliage. The plant propagates through side shoots, and under optimal conditions, it grows at a medium rate, adding a lush and vibrant look to your aquarium.
